Welcome to Edition 2 of ADPCC as we begin our journey through cinematic blackness. We begin this season with Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, directed by Johan Grimonprez. It unravels the threads of the complex story of the struggle for independence in mid-20th-century Congo—framing it with the African American jazz music of the time and the global politics of the Cold War. After the screening, we'll gather for a guided conversation to unpack the film's cultural impact and creative DNA.
ADPCC explores cinema as a way of understanding history, culture, identity, and the ways stories shape how we see ourselves and the world around us. Each edition brings the community together around films that rarely get a room of their own. Through watching and conversation, we revisit these stories, consider their relevance today, and create space for different perspectives to meet. Edition 2 continues the series with another selection of films that speak to Black experiences across different places, histories, and generations.
